At 2 p.m. on August 17, 72-year-old farmer artist Zhang Qingyi was waiting at the village gate in Huyi District, Xi’an, when he greeted an American family of five.
For over two decades, this farmhouse-turned gallery, converted from his own courtyard, has welcomed countless visitors from around the world. At its peak,it received nearly 2,000 foreign guests a year. The family’s daughter Sophia stepped inside andimmediatelyexclaimed: “This is like a small museum!”
Zhang’s paintings feature bold colors and compositions, and capturethe everyday life of the Guanzhong Plain: wheat harvesting, market trips, Lunar New Year celebrations.Their exaggerated shapes and vibrant hues completely captivated his overseas guests.

Tucked away in the gallery is a guestbook Zhang has treasured for years. It is filled with messages in different languages: English, French, Japanese, andeven some he cannot identify. Some visitors wrote “beautiful,” others drew a heart. Zhang admits he cannot read every entry, but every time he flips through it, he can feel the warmth and goodwill. “Despite the language barriers and cultural differences,” he says, “foreign friends are drawn to the everyday lives of ordinary Chinese people captured in these paintings.”

Huxian farmer paintings were born in the 1950s. Back then, local farmers held a hoe in one hand and a paintbrush in the other, putting spring sowing, autumn harvest, festive rituals, and everyday life onto the canvas. Paper-cutting, murals, New Year paintings, embroidery — the folk crafts passed down through generations all found their wayinto these works.
More than six decades later, the brush has never stopped keeping pace with the times. From traditional farming to livestreamed agricultural sales, from ox-drawn plows to crop-dusting drones, farmer artists have always painted the lives they see with their own eyes.

Today, the community of Huxian farmer paintershas grown to over 2,300 artists, with more than 9,000 works exhibited in 68 countries and regions around the world.
These hands are strong enough to hold a plow, and steady enough to hold a brush.
